Description
With ‘Horizon’, his new album released on the MognoMusic label, Marcel Powell pays a respectful yet innovative tribute to his father's legacy, while asserting his own artistic identity. By exploring a variety of musical territories, while remaining rooted in Brazilian tradition, he confirms his place among the great names in contemporary guitar, offering us a rich, nuanced and deeply personal body of work.
‘Horizon’, the new album by guitarist Marcel Powell, is a musical portrait recorded mainly solo in Rio de Janeiro and released on the Belgian label Mogno Music. The title is that of a piece by Marcel's father - the famous guitarist Baden Powell - who passed on his knowledge and technique to him. While clearly demonstrating that he has assimilated the master's style perfectly - particularly in his highly personal samba rhythms - Marcel has made a name for himself by developing his own language, drawing on jazz, classical music, flamenco and, of course, the many Brazilian genres such as samba, choro, bossa nova, baião...
A guitar virtuoso, Marcel is also a composer, penning 9 of the 14 tracks on the album, sometimes in partnership with other Brazilian musicians. In many of the compositions on this album, the guitarist's lyrical and poetic side contrasts with the energy of the samba that he is usually known for, and which we find in Sempre Alegre.
On Tom Jobim's Samba do Avião, Marcel showed off his talents as a guitar arranger. He also revisits a composition by Brazilian guitarist Ravi Sawaya dedicated to Baden: ‘Badenania 27’. ‘Solfegietto’ is the only non-Brazilian track, but the choice of this Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach composition is understandable given Marcel's father's admiration for Johann Sebastian Bach.
Two tracks depart from the principle of solo guitar: Bilhete, by Ivan Lins, where Marcel is joined by singer David Linx and mandolinist Armandinho, and Pro Tião, where he invites trombonist Roberto de Oliveira.
