Seville is a city that captures the imagination. It is said to have been founded by the Greek hero Hercules. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Moors and Romans have all left their mark here. Christopher Columbus is buried here. Bizet drew inspiration for his opera Carmen from the local cigar rollers. The world-famous character of Don Juan first appeared here in the 17th century. Flamenco is flourishing here more than ever...
Walking around the city, Moorish influences are particularly striking. The Arabs ruled here for centuries. The music of this Arab Andalusia was perpetuated in North Africa, where many Muslims took refuge after the Christian reconquest.
This new programme focuses on two of Seville's great vihuelists. Fuenllana and Mudarra make their Renaissance instruments sound in all their splendour. Saad and Sofie arrange their inventive fantasies, virtuoso diminutions and majestic dances. Together with Tunisian singer Amel Sdiri, they perform romances and canciones that evoke the past and sing melancholy songs about life, love and the city. Classical Arabic music and Sephardic and North African songs complete this varied musical tableau.
