ShaoHuan Hung, a Taiwanese man who has been living in Brussels for several years, plays the sheng. Have you never heard of this instrument? That’s hardly surprising: originating from the Chinese tradition, it is a sort of mouth organ, much larger than a harmonica, which has no equivalent in Western instrumentology… or anywhere else in the world for that matter — a sort of platypus in the world of instruments. Shao Huan has taken it out of the realm of traditional music to become the first to introduce it into jazz, the quintessential fusion genre. Surprising everyone by bringing it out during bebop jam sessions, he proved that jazz knows no boundaries and impressed the musicians present. With his Ashesash Jazz Quintet, he draws inspiration from European jazz of the ECM era/Avant guard jazz and combines his instrument with the tenor saxophone and a rhythm section to present a completely new and unique concept, which has won us over and is sure to win you over too.
