Shin Chul — Between Korean Tradition and Contemporary Creation
MA Art Space welcomes Shin Chul, a Korean ceramic artist whose practice engages with the living traditions of Korean ceramics.
For many years, the artist has explored the Moon Jar, an iconic form of Korean pottery admired for its rounded silhouette, simplicity and subtle irregularities. Rather than pursuing geometric perfection, the Moon Jar celebrates the delicate balance between control and spontaneity, the presence of the material and the individuality of each piece.
Shin Chul’s work brings traditional craftsmanship into dialogue with a contemporary sensibility. His approach invites us to pay attention to gesture, the rhythm of the potter’s wheel, volume and the nuances of clay. He also explores buncheong, a Korean ceramic tradition known for its expressive surfaces and slip decoration, where spontaneity and freedom of gesture play an essential role.
An Exhibition and an Encounter with the Artist’s Practice
The exhibition offers an opportunity to discover Shin Chul’s artistic world and experience a practice in which form, material and time are central.
Alongside the exhibition, three days of masterclasses will offer participants the opportunity to explore his approach to the Moon Jar, discover wheel-throwing techniques and gain insight into the gestures behind these distinctive forms.
Organised at MA Art Space in collaboration with Han Collection Korean Art & Antiques, this project offers a special encounter with an artist whose work reflects the vitality of contemporary Korean ceramics and the transmission of traditional craftsmanship.
